(Play sappy soap opera music.)

ANNOUNCER- And now, time once again for America's first and only sanitized and christianized soap opera. Welcome to... Promised Land! When we last left the Promised Land, Bud had stunned his fiancee Lucy with a shocking revelation about past indiscretions. Can Lucy forgive him?

(Bud and Lucy enter.)

BUDY- Lucy. You've come back.

LUCY- How many?

BUD- What?

LUCY- How many girls, Bud?

BUD- I don't know.

LUCY- Yes you do. Don't give me that! How many were there?

BUD- Seven.

LUCY- Seven girls?

BUD- Yes. Seven.

LUCY- Oh my... I must sit down.

(Rushes to her side.)

BUD- Take it easy, Lucy.

LUCY- Did any of them... mean anything?

BUD- Not any more.

LUCY- Are you sure?

BUD- I'm sure.

LUCY- Look me in the eyes and tell me that.

BUD- Lucy, none of the seven girls I kissed mean anything to me.

LUCY- That's all it was, was kissing?

BUD- Yes. Just a kiss. And lips only. No... you know.

LUCY- I see.

BUD- Can you ever forgive me?

LUCY- Bud... I love you. And yes, I can forgive you.

BUD- Oh, Lucy, you've made me so happy.

(They hug, then they hold hands, intertwining fingers.)

BUD- I'm so glad we're okay.

LUCY- I am too. And I am glad I have kept my lips pure for you.

BUD- I love that you kept your lips pure for me.

LUCY- I love that you love that I kept my lips pure.

BUD- I love the way you hold hands. The way you lock your fingers in mine.

LUCY- Yes. Philip taught me how to do that.

(Bud jerks his hand away in shock.)

BUD- I'm sorry... Philip?

LUCY- Philip Baxter.

BUD- What do you mean he taught you to hold hands like that?

LUCY- I used to date Philip.

BUD- And you held hands with him?

LUCY- Yes.

BUD- I can't believe you! You said you had never been intimate with any guys.

LUCY- I haven't. My lips are clean. I've never kissed any guys!

BUD- But you've held hands with one?

LUCY- Yes... and a few more.

BUD- How many?

LUCY- Bud, please--

BUD- How many, Lucy?

LUCY- (counts, taking a LONG time to do so) I guess, maybe... thirty four?

BUD- THIRTY FOUR?!?!?

LUCY- Wait... no, thirty five.

BUD- I don't believe what I'm hearing. Now I have to sit down. (sits)

LUCY- Why are you acting this way? It's only hand holding!

BUD- After the way you freaked out about my kissing a few girls, you expect me NOT to

freak out over the fact you held hands with thirty-five guys?

LUCY- Bud, it's just hand-holding. It's not like we kissed!

BUD- Oh there you go, bringing my mistakes up! Sorry, but I think holding hands with

thirty-five guys is far worse than kissing seven girls!

LUCY- You insensitive, judgmental, hypocrite!

(Bud and Lucy freeze.)
