SCENE ONE
(Set in a casual sit down restaurant. There is a table for
two in center stage and another small table off to one corner. Clark and John
enter and talk in the doorway of the restaurant.)
CLARK: Tonight I'm meeting Candi. My friend Matt said she's really cute so I
thought why not?
JOHN: Good luck man! I don't know why you let your friends set you up on blind
dates. It's ridiculous! This has got to be your fiftieth date this week!
CLARK: Not fiftieth . . . (pauses counting on his fingers) SIXTH! And I
have three more
after tonight.
(From the opposite side of the stage, Candi enters. She is a bouncy blonde and she comes prancing in.)
CLARK: Oh man I gotta go. I think that's her, but just in
case you know what to do if I give you the signal.
JOHN: (sarcastically) Yeah, yeah . . . just go on your date you stud.
(Clark walks over to Candi)
CLARK: Candi?
CANDI: With an I!
CLARK: Huh?
CANDI: Candi with an I. . . C-A-(pauses) uh...blah blah I!
CLARK: Right. . . wanna sit down?(they sit down at the center table) So . . .
you go to
the University too right?
CANDI: uh...(giggling throughout) yeah, sometimes learning makes my head hurt.
So
like what's your favorite color?
CLARK: (already looking annoyed) Well, I guess it's blue.
CANDI: (chomping her gum and twirling her hair) Really? 'Cause mine's like a tie
between purple and clear.
(Clark give an obvious signal to John and John rushes over)
JOHN: Oh Clark I'm so glad I found you! Your grandmother is in the hospital! You
have
to come at once!
CLARK: Oh Candi, I'm so sorry, but it looks like I'm going to have to go.
CANDI: Oh ok Clarky. . . Call me, my number is 61104!
(Clark grabs John's arm and hurries out of the
restaurant)
SCENE TWO
(Clark and John enter the restaurant again)
JOHN: So who's tonight's date with?
CLARK: Miranda. But I'm a little nervous. My sister set us up. She seems to
think me and Miranda would be perfect for each other. I thought I would give it
a chance. Just remember the signal.
JOHN: Yeah, yeah I know the drill.
(John sits in his usual spot and Clark sits at the center table. He is
getting impatient and is tapping his fingers. Finally Miranda walks in. She is
dressed all in black. Maybe a goth look to her)
MIRANDA: Hey, you Clark?
CLARK: (looks up, clearly surprised) Uh. . .yeah. . . are you Miranda?
MIRANDA: Yeah, that's me. (sits down) So. . . your sister said you like
the band Zombies in the Ditch.
CLARK: (very confused) Uh. . . no. . . I think what she said was that I
shop at Abercrombie and Fitch. (awkward silence) Well what other music do
you like?
MIRANDA: Anything dark. I like dark music. Actually I like anything dark.
(Clark gives the signal in a rushed fashion and John comes over.) Dark
clothes, dark makeup because I think we are all really dark deep inside. . .
JOHN: Clark! I'm so glad I found you! Your grandmother is really sick and was
put in the hospital! You have to come quick!
CLARK: Oh Miranda, I'm so sorry, but I have to go. Maybe we can do this another
time.
MIRANDA: (obviously not amused) Whatever.
(John tries to control his laughter as he and Clark
exit.)
SCENE THREE
(Clark and John enter and Jennifer is already sitting at
the table.)
CLARK: Alright, there she is. You know what to do.
(Clark sits down with Jennifer)
JENNIFER: Hello Clark. I have heard many good things about you.
CLARK: (reaches over and puts one of his hands on hers) Yeah, Jennifer, I've
heard a
lot of good things about you too.
JENNIFER: (lovingly) Clark . . . (sternly) O.K. I need to know where this
relationship is
going. If I want to have my first child by the time I'm 25, then I have to get
married by
the time I'm 23, and I want to be engaged for at least 6 months. . .
(Clark starts to give the signal, but John is already on his way over)
JOHN: Clark we have to go NOW! Um. . . your grandma's sick, she's in the
hospital....FORGET IT! LET'S JUST GO!
(Before Jennifer can object, John yanks Clark out
of his chair and hurries out of the restaurant.)
SCENE FOUR
(Clark and John enter the restaurant and a beautiful woman is waiting at the
table. It's Cassandra. She smiles at Clark.)
CLARK: (smiles back at Cassandra and then turns back to John) Hey it
looks like I've finally lucked out! She looks normal. Maybe we won't need to use
the signal tonight. (he goes and sits with Cassandra) Hello there
Cassandra.
CASSANDRA: Hi Clark, it's good to finally meet you. You go to the University in
town right? I go to a small private college in the next town. What's your major?
CLARK: Pediatrics, I love working with kids.
CASSANDRA: Me too! I'm actually studying Child Psychology.
CLARK: Really? What kind of music do you like and please don't say "anything
dark".
CASSANDRA: (laughs) No, I like the classics like Frank Sinatra and Dean
Martin. All my friends tease me, but I can't help it!
CLARK: You're kidding right? (Cassandra looks embarrassed) I LOVE THOSE
EXACT SAME SINGERS! (Clark takes Cassandra's hands in his) Do you believe
in love at first sight Cassandra?
(As he says this another female walks in and make eye contact with Cassandra.
Cassandra gives the girl a "signal" and she comes over to the table.)
GIRL: Cassandra! I'm so glad I found you! Your grandfather is really sick and
you need to come to the hospital at once!
(Cassandra looks at Clark and shrugs and hurries
out of the restaurant with the girl. Clark gives a big sigh and puts his head in
his hands on the table.)
